A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property close to Verona to carry out an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three officers killed served in the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals were arrested at the location and one more individual who ran away following the blast was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.

The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area displayed the property left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member set off the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander told the media.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast directly hit our members,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also located at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The official was convinced the explosion had taken place on a floor above the entrance and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to Italian media, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
